In the shadow of Corpus Christi, Texas rests Old Bayview cemetery. The oldest military cemetery in the State of Texas and the second oldest in the nation. Old Bayview contains an incredible array of memorials ranging from European settlers and Texas Rangers to Buffalo Soldiers and politicians. It's a cemetery where each step offers one incredible historical insight after another telling the very story of the founding of this country and the state of Texas. Old Bayview was established in the wake of a naval tragedy off the coast of Corpus Christi via a land grant from one of Richard King's partners.
I discovered Old Bayview by chance and found a cemetery in utter disrepair. What was most disturbing and heartbreaking was the fact that it was the product of vandalism which traumatized Old Bayview. In coordination with the director of the city and county historical commission, I authored an article documenting the tragic state of the cemetery and supported an outreach program to town council members and media. Additionally, my article was published in a town newspaper.
